Detox Protocols and Binders: Should You Jump On the Bandwagon?

Content

Do I Need A Detox?

If you are active on social media in the holistic health space you may have found lots of content on detox protocols for parasites, heavy metals, and general exposure to our environmental toxins. We're ALL exposed to gunk. So, it should follow that we could all just do a detox, reset the body, clean the slate, and feel great, right?

Maybe not. Without knowing what you are actually dealing with---which parasites if any, which pathogens, if any. or which metals or mineral imbalances, blindly following someone else's detox protocol may do more harm than good.

Let's break down why.

The Social Media Delusion

Social media makes detox look simple.

A friend feels better after a cleanse. A supplement company makes a claim that sounds science-backed. It all feels logical until you're three weeks in feeling worse and have no idea why.

Then you pivot to the real problem: people jump into binders without foundations in place. They don't even know if they have functioning digestion and open detoxification pathways.

The truest barometer for whether you are detoxing properly is whether your digestion is functioning as expected. If it ain't perfect, you start there. No special protocols necessary, at least not yet.

For others, copper regulation can be a hidden issue, and this a big problem that few actually know about. If you don't know your copper load, you don't know what taking a binder or starting an aggressive detox protocol might do to your system.

Moreover, without testing blood or hair, you don't know if your liver and kidneys can handle mobilizing parasites and/or metals.

Think of mobilization as the process by which any parasites or metals that are harbored in your tissues are shaken up and released. The binders work to attach to them, but that doesn't mean they will necessarily hang on to them if too much is released at once.

This is the very scenario when binders actually hurt instead of help. They wake the monsters when the body doesn't have the tools to fight them, and now the monsters are angry.

For most people who experience digestive disruption or mystery symptoms who haven't gone through the foundational testing of hair tissue mineral analysis or even functional blood chemistry analyses, starting with the basics--the lowest hanging fruit--is what will make the greatest impact on achieving body homeostasis.

A nutrient-rich diet (Pro tip: not every "clean" diet is nutrient dense!), adequate, restful sleep, stress management, gentle movement, digestive support.

Then mineral balancing. Which can only be properly achieved by knowing what's out of balance in the first place!

Then introduce binders and layer them in once you have data to support it and the body's detox pathways are open.

That sequencing is really non-negotiable.

What Should You Do Instead of "Detox"?

For most people who experience digestive disruption or mystery symptoms who haven't gone through the foundational testing, starting with the basics--the lowest hanging fruit--is what will make the greatest impact on achieving body homeostasis.

Here are the main elements:

-Focusing on a nutrient-rich diet (guess what? not every "clean" diet is nutrient dense!), adequate, restful sleep, stress management, gentle movement, digestive support.

-Then mineral balancing....which can only be properly achieved by knowing what's out of balance in the first place! (Enter HTMA)

-Then introduce binders and layer them in once you have data to support it and the body's detox pathways are open (ie, digestion is normalized and liver/kidneys are properly supported)

Sometimes we start with a binder before mineral balancing. But this is highly individualized and depends on their situation. For someone who's more sensitive, has overt copper toxicity, or is dealing with a lot of heavy metals, starting the binder first for a week or two can reduce the initial mobilization symptoms. This can seem counterintuitive, but the binder can mop up what's already circulating.

There are several binders out there, and each have specific predilections. Zeolite has become a popular choice because of it's versatility and high efficacy. That doesn't make it the best choice every time for every one.

Diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay, chlorella/spirulina, citrus pectin, activated charcoal, and fulvic-humic acid each bind to specific materials, but mostly in the digestive tract.

Zeolite is the best choice when mycotoxin or heavy metal accumulation in the brain is suspected since it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Activated charcoal is best for acute poisoning situations, and will absolutely bind indiscriminately, so not a good choice for ongoing binding. Never take with anything you're willing to lose. (Bonus: can bind to gases in the intestines as well as toxins)

Bentonite clay similarly binds to heavy metals and toxins in the GI tract (as well as medications), but it's a step up, in that its origin in volcanic ash lends an adsorption character; it deposits trace minerals as it absorbs the nasties. The issue here is that it can be constipating if not taken with enough water. Generally, it can be soothing for digestion if things are overactive.

Chlorella and spirulina are algae-based binders, that not only have a penchant for arsenic and mercury (and Old Lace?), but are considered superfoods packed with b-vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Too much can cause loose stools.

Silica is a mineral that we need in trace amounts. High amounts are found in foods like oats, green beans, bananas, brown rice, and herbs like horsetail. It's necessary for bone and collagen formation, though we tend to get enough from our diets. As a binder, it has an affinity for aluminum and would only be suggested in the case of high aluminum exposure or accumulation. (there is a molecule of silica in zeolite)

Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is another favorite in the functional health world as a powerful metals binder, specifically attracted to mercury, lead, and cadmium. As you might expect, it is formulated from citrus skin. In high amounts it can cause diarrhea. Not useful for mycotoxins or chemical toxins.

Fulvic-Humic Acid is my go-to binder and remineralizer. This is a great all-around choice for binding to the onslaught of toxins we're all relentlessly exposed to while also exchanging the toxins for much needed minerals. In addition to binding to chemical toxins, and heavy metals, it also captures mycotoxins in the digestive tract. It's inferior to zeolite in that it is not known to cross the blood-brain barrier.

I recommend this binder to almost all of my clients, children and adults alike.

Zeolite clinoptilolite binds mycotoxins, copper, aluminum, and glyphosate through cation exchange. It has to be in the correct dose in order to properly perform this function. (outlined below)

Too low a dose of zeolite can stir things up without clearing anything, leaving metals circulating and causing symptoms people mistake for "detox reactions."

The particle size matters too. You need two sizes: particles under 11 micron for systemic work and particles between 11-40 micron to work in the GI tract where most toxins live.

HTMA tells you if a binder is even necessary, and how to dose it safely. Without testing and blindly binding, you're potentially causing more harm than good.

What is Zeolite?

  1. If you’ve never seen it, consuming a solution of powdered zeolite “dissolved” in a glass of water essentially looks like drinking liquid, milky ash. Because, that’s exactly what it is.

Its story starts millions of years ago when volcanoes erupted, spewing their molten discharges into the air and over the earth. The chemical composition of this ash was silica and aluminum, or aluminosilicate. Both considered light metals and present in our environment and the Earth’s crust today, what makes zeolite interesting as molecules of silica and aluminum is the stable honeycomb structure that they form together, which can vary in their ratios of those elements.

For instance, zeolite clinoptilolite (the form of zeolite touted for health benefits) has a silica to alumina ratio of four to one.(1) Because of its porous, crystalline structure, zeolite has the capacity to lock on to and absorb various materials, thus carrying those materials out of the body.

Forms of Zeolite

  1. Without getting too deep into the weeds, there are a few different forms of zeolite on the market, and being educated about what the products are can help your personal training clients make an informed choice.

The known forms include:

  1. -clinoptilolite

  2. -mordenite

  3. -chabazite

  4. -analcime

  5. -phillipsite

  6. -erionite

  7. -heulandite

The natural clinoptilolite zeolites, mined from the Earth and known for their safety profile, are preferred for medicinal use versus the remaining natural forms or lab-created/industrial versions that are potentially toxic, and should be avoided, like Zeolite-A.

Make sure the product label designates that it is natural clinoptilolite zeolite. Without that designation you don't know what you're getting.

Furthermore, some companies boast a liquid form of zeolite product, attempting to improve its marketability. In order for zeolite to function as intended, it needs to be administered in its unaltered form. What some companies have done is “activate” or “hydrolyze” the zeolite, which sounds catchy and high-tech, but essentially renders the molecule useless. These are the forms often found in liquid products.

The only other form of liquid zeolite is in effect a suspension of the powder added to the liquid, aimed at assuaging the administerability by removing the step of mixing. However, these products are generally not recommended either since they tend not to have enough product to accomplish the goal of binding and can cause side effects when the toxins are not properly bound and removed.

You’re better off just sticking with powdered products and mixing with a liquid yourself.

What you may also find when comparing products is the micron size of the molecules. This is where things get tricky.

Different particle sizes actually serve different purposes in the body and in conjunction, will accomplish the job of binding most completely.

The ideal mix for full-body support will include a product that contains 80-85% of <10-11 microns and 15-20% 10-40 microns.

The former, and smaller, micron size is essential for systemic clearance as it crosses blood-brain barrier, allowing for the removal of toxins in the tissues, and especially helpful for headaches.

The larger micron size will remain in the GI tract, effectively binding to heavy metals from our foods and other gut toxins.

  1. How It Works as a Binder

  1. If you would like to geek out on the chemistry of how zeolite works, read on. The crystalline cage of the zeolite molecule creates an ion/cation exchange in the body. While the silicon element of the zeolite retains a neutral charge, the larger aluminum portion carries a negative charge. Such a negative charge attracts heavy metals, mycotoxins, VOCs, glyphosate, and other biotoxins.

What’s more, the aluminosilicate is not all that zeolite brings to the table. In its natural state, this binding agent carries with it the four main minerals that our bodies need for all of its metabolic processes (and have sadly been disappearing from our over-farmed soils and subsequent crops): Calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.

When zeolite shows up to take out the bad stuff, (like mycotoxins, copper, cadmium, aluminum, glyphosate) it also drops off everything we need most. Picture it like a school bus loaded with the passengers of calcium, magnesium, Sodium, and Potassium. At each stop (the cells) it drops minerals and picks up toxins to carry them away.

How To Dose Zeolite When You Do

  1. How should someone use zeolite properly to ensure positive outcomes and reduce the possibility of side effects after determining that a need is present?

Taking too low a dose of zeolite initially can stir things up without clearing anything, leaving metals circulating and causing symptoms people mistake for "detox reactions."

  1. Reverse titration dosing (starting high and tapering) is actually the recommended approach when starting zeolite, and then eventually reducing to a maintenance dose.

  2. The typical protocol recommends dosing for 90 days.

  3. For Basic Detox

Adults take 5 grams, twice a day, preferably morning and evening. Continue for 90-180 days then taper to maintenance dose below. It is recommended to be monitored for improvement by a health practitioner that specializes in heavy metal detoxing.

I'll be blunt, 5 grams is a lot of product. Generally, a scoop is 1 gram. This is chalky stuff and it will need to be blended. You've been warned!

  1. Maintenance Dose

Take 5 grams just once a day, any time.

  2. For Fighting Illness or Extreme Toxicity and Sensitive Individuals

(Again, this is an approach that should be recommended and monitored by a health pro)

  3. Take 5g three times a day, about 6-8 hours apart. Continue this dosing until health improves and return to a maintenance dose.

It may be prudent to take 2+ hours from medications, vitamins, minerals, or supplements to ensure there is no binding to them. However, research indicates zeolite does not interfere with absorption

  4. Zeolite can mix in liquids or food for convenience. It is safe for kids or pets!

  5. Children and Pets

For kids under 12, reduce dosing by half. For small dogs or cats, the dose is 1 gram, and for larger dogs, it’s 2 grams.

Suggested brands include Vykon Customs which require a practitioner to order (I have privileges with Vykon), Zeo Health, ZeoCharge, and ZeoBoost the latter of which are available for online purchase.

  6. Some practitioners recommend staying on a maintenance dose of zeolite indefinitely. I don't subscribe to this view personally simply because gentler options exist for the long-term, like a fulvic-humic acid blend, which both binds and provides trace minerals in much smaller amounts.

There is a lot to know when it comes to binders, toxin loads, heavy metals, and detoxing properly. This was just a review scratching the surface. When it comes to your body, never forget that your systems are incredibly sophisticated, complex, and indeed, intelligent. Bombarding your body with things it doesn't need without knowing what is in need is disrupting the balance your body is seeking.

Your symptoms are signals, not a war to fight.

Test, don't guess. Find out what your body needs first, and then, judiciously approach restoring balance with the right tools and guidance at your disposal.
